Hoje vou falar sobre algumas diferenças sutis entre algumas palavras, como no caso de "barely" e "almost", dois advérbios.
Eu costumo usar o nick "barely insane" no msn e muitas pessoas me perguntam o que é "barely", então como pode haver outras pessoas que também não saibam o significado dessa palavra, aqui vai uma pequena explicação: "barely" indica alguma coisa que é, mas quase não é ou que está, mas quase não está. Um correspondente em português seria "mal" quando usado da forma apropriada, claro. Exemplo: "I was barely awake when i made that post."; em português: "Eu mal estava acordado quando fiz aquele post.". Então o que significa "barely insane"? Quase insano?
Este é o ponto em que entra a palavra "almost", simplesmente traduzida para "quase". Quando você diz que algo quase é/está alguma coisa, ele ainda não está. Diferentemente de "barely" que indica que uma coisa é/está, mas quase não é/está. Logo, "barely insane" é alguém que quase não é insano, mas que por pouca coisa[by a very little] é. Por isso, eu sou quase normal. x)
